I have had an educational week.
1. I have long wondered why beets don't taste like how I remembered them from elementary school. I absolutely loved those dark red things on the salad bar, and I've never been able to figure out why beets I've had since weren't remotely similar.
They weren't beets. They were, apparently, some food dye saturated form of canned apples. We can thank my mom's book club for this info-I would have probably wondered about it until the day I died, had they not chosen to have their luncheon at the club house of an assisted-living facility.
2. Sponge cake is not light and fluffy. I have no idea why I thought it was, but there you go. Sponge cake (egg-free Victoria sponge cake, anyway) is surprisingly dense, and not at all what I meant to make for strawberry shortcake, but it worked.
3. The Indiana Jones movies are not, in fact, set in the modern day. This makes the presence of Nazis more understandable, I suppose. I had just thought that they were very dedicated Nazis, who'd had 50 years to condense their evil.
